چکیده

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover has been assessing the habitability and geologic history of Gale crater, since landing in 2012. One primary objectives mission was to investigate a clay-bearing unit identified using orbital spectral data, designated Glen Torridon (GT) region. This region particular interest because its elevated abundance clay minerals that may have preserved geochemical evidence ancient habitable environments. explored GT for ∼750 sols analyzed eight drilled samples with Sample Analysis at (SAM) instrument suite evolved gas analysis-mass spectrometry. Evolved sulfur-bearing gases provided insight about composition sulfur-containing compounds Martian samples. were by three methods understand oxidation state sulfur samples: (a) SO2 evolution temperature, (b) quadratic discriminant analysis comparing SAM data SAM-like laboratory investigations, (c) isotope values from 34SO2/32SO2. results these consistent majority being an oxidized state, but two presence small amounts reduced sulfur. could variety sources represents nonequilibrium assemblage supported putative chemolithotrophic metabolisms.

Gale crater: the Mars Science Laboratory/ Curiosity Rover Landing Site

Gale crater formed from an impact on Mars *3.6 billion years ago. It hosts a central mound nearly 100 km wide and *5 km high, consisting of layered rocks with a variety of textures and spectral properties. The oldest exposed layers contain variably hydrated sulphates and smectite clay minerals, implying an aqueous origin, whereas the younger layers higher on themound are covered by amantle of d...

Curiosity at Gale crater, Mars: characterization and analysis of the Rocknest sand shadow.

The Rocknest aeolian deposit is similar to aeolian features analyzed by the Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs) Spirit and Opportunity. The fraction of sand <150 micrometers in size contains ~55% crystalline material consistent with a basaltic heritage and ~45% x-ray amorphous material. The amorphous component of Rocknest is iron-rich and silicon-poor and is the host of the volatiles (water, oxygen,...

Mars atmosphere. Mars methane detection and variability at Gale crater.

Reports of plumes or patches of methane in the martian atmosphere that vary over monthly time scales have defied explanation to date. From in situ measurements made over a 20-month period by the tunable laser spectrometer of the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite on Curiosity at Gale crater, we report detection of background levels of atmospheric methane of mean value 0.69 ± 0.25 parts pe...

Evidence for indigenous nitrogen in sedimentary and aeolian deposits from the Curiosity rover investigations at Gale crater, Mars.

The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) investigation on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover has detected oxidized nitrogen-bearing compounds during pyrolysis of scooped aeolian sediments and drilled sedimentary deposits within Gale crater. Total N concentrations ranged from 20 to 250 nmol N per sample. After subtraction of known N sources in SAM, our results support the equivalent of 1...
